Is Sarah Palin Running for President?

The Sunday before the midterm elections, Chris Wallace interviewed Sarah Palin on Fox News Sunday. It was a great interview. As expected, Chris tried to pin her down on presidential aspirations.

I was struck by how she handled the question. She answered, “I would decide after discussing it with my family and just checking out the lay of the land and seeing who else is interested in doing it because I don’t need to run for office. I don’t need a title.”

Chris followed up, “I think you’re having too much fun. I think you’re making too much money. You’re still a big player in national politics. You don’t have a hundred people like me chasing around saying ‘What does she read in the morning?’ I don’t think you’re going to run.”

And then she responded, “You know, the country is worth it though, to make those sacrifices. When we talk about making money today having a lot of fun today having all this freedom. If the country needed me, and I’m not saying that the country does and that the country would ever necessarily want to choose me over anyone else, but I would be willing to make the sacrifices, if need be, for America.”

You know, I was very excited when she was first announced as a candidate for Vice President. Then, as the country waded through the very tough 2008 campaign season and some in the left-wing media were able to successfully embarrass her, I became a little embarrassed myself and began to question whether or not she would be presidential material. But my wife gave me a copy of her biography, Going Rogue, which I read through. I was profoundly impressed with her honesty and courage. I would support her in a heartbeat if she chose to run. And, after reading that biography and measuring the woman I got to know in the process, I believe she is stating exactly what she thinks about running for president. She may run, but if she sees someone declare their candidacy that she can support wholeheartedly, she would just as soon throw her weight behind that candidate.

Later, when Chris Wallace got into the panel portion of his show, he asked the panelists what they thought of her chances. Brit Hume, whom I respect immensely, seemed to reveal that he also believed she meant exactly what she said. Brit said, “It’s not all clear to me that she’s running.”

Kirsten Powers, a Democratic strategist, showed some insight. She commented, “They don’t understand what’s going on in the country if they think that they can stop her. People are tired of the idea of party bosses getting behind and trying to decide who the presidential candidate’s going to be.”

I agree. She would be tough competition, whatever role she chooses to play.
