Get ready for Republicans to cave on Keystone Pipeline

It nearly drives me crazy, to see this wimpiness in our Republican leaders in Congress, this snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, but we’ve seen it time after time and I sense it about to happen again.

The Democrats are showing fear over the Republicans tying the Keystone Pipeline deal to the extension of the payroll tax holiday. You can tell because they are abandoning all reason in answering it. Nancy Pelosi is accusing Republicans of wanting to poison people. And the establishment media has smelled fear in the Democrats and has come to their aid with full force. I heard two accounts on the radio news over the impasse, one from ABC News and the other from a local station, and in both cases the media was in full distortion mode, which means they are afraid the truth will get out. In the local news story, they called the Keystone Pipeline “controversial.” But it’s not—it’s popular. They neglected to mention that it is supported by labor. They both mentioned environmental concerns, but neither reported that there are three years of environmental studies on the project. Neither really gave the Republican side of the issue. That level of deception by the state-run media is a clear indication that they are afraid of the truth getting out. So what do the Republicans do when they see their opponents sweat? Why, back off, of course. They haven’t yet, but from what they are saying, that is clearly what they are planning.

I heard Mitch McConnell in an interview Sunday with Chris Wallace. Chris asked him, “If the Keystone Pipeline is a non-starter from their point of view, where’s the compromise here? And what are the chances that a deal will be worked out before more than 150 million Americans get a payroll tax hike?”

McConnell: “Yeah, that isn’t gonna happen, and obviously we’ll reach an agreement.”

Man, how I wish this man had a spine! I believe that if the Republicans would take the position, “Include the Keystone Pipeline or there is no deal,” they would get it. The Democrats are clearly afraid of being portrayed as job-killers. But here is McConnell, clearly telegraphing that there will be no line drawn in the sand. And the irony is that they cave because they’re afraid of being unpopular, but their lack of spine is a key factor in that unpopularity.
