Newt Gingrich should withdraw and support Rick Santorum

Yesterday on Mark Levin’s radio show, he mentioned some prominent pundit who suggested that Newt Gingrich should drop out and throw his support to Rick Santorum. Good idea!

Newt has been saying he could beat Mitt Romney if only Rick Santorum would do the right thing and get out of the race. First of all, how awfully crass of you, Newt, to suggest that. Ironically, this only highlights the reason that Newt, out of the three leading candidates, is my last choice. Self-absorbed politicians do not make good presidents. They get enamored of power and that is exactly what we’re trying to get rid of in the White House. A reporter asked Rick Santorum if he thought Newt should quit and he responded with much more dignity saying that it isn’t his position to ask any other candidate to get out of the race. Right answer, Rick.

Look at it this way. If we nominate Romney, we’ll throw away the Obamacare issue. But if we nominate Newt, we’ll throw away the “narcissistic, petulant, power-hungry president” issue. I’ll put it another way. I’d rather have an out-and-out moderate as our candidate than someone with character flaws as serious as Newt’s. And from my talking with other people who are out here in the “trenches,” there are a lot of conservatives who feel the same way.

Furthermore, I don’t believe Newt can beat Romney OR Obama. Fox News reported last night on polls that indicate that if Rick Santorum dropped out, his supporters would split between Romney and Gingrich. I think they’re right on. I’m a Santorum supporter who would go to Romney if Rick dropped out. And I know several others in that category. No, Newt, you can’t blame your defeat on Senator Santorum.

Santorum’s situation is interesting. A lot of people like him. He has stayed out of the mud in this campaign and has the fewest enemies of any of the Republican candidates. He is recognized as the most solid conservative still in the race. The main reason people aren’t supporting him is because they don’t see enough other people supporting him. Every solid conservative I ask who isn’t for Santorum gives, as a reason for that, a variation of this theme. All he needs is a good spark – a key endorsement, a boost, something to psychologically give credibility to a top tier label, to ignite that hope that he could win, and I believe he would run away with this nomination.
