The War against the Republican Establishment

I just listened to the Special Report panel discussion on Fox News, and this is one time where the leftist, Juan Williams made more sense than the supposed conservatives, Bill Kristol and Charles Krauthammer. And it underscores the battle that conservatives have with the Republican establishment.

They were discussing today’s Senate primary in Delaware, where the Tea Party endorsed candidate, Christine O’Donnell, has just surged to even in the polls with the establishment candidate, Mike Castle. Krauthammer and Kristol both feel strongly that it is a big mistake for Republicans to vote for Christine O’Donnell because she is not as electable as the leftist Republican, Mike Castle.

It underscores the battle conservatives have with the Republican establishment. Castle is very liberal. He wants cap and trade, he said he won’t try to repeal Obamacare. He is for big government, big taxes, and all of the bad things that are the very cause of the dissatisfaction people have historically had with the Republicans in Congress.

Anyway, I expected that Bill and Charles wouldn’t “get it.” What surprised me was that Juan Williams does. In his comments, he said that for him, he is an outsider on this issue, and he understood why grass roots Republicans are for O’Donnell. And to support his reasoning on why they should support O’Donnell, he cited polls where the approval levels for Democrats in Congress is very low, but approval for Republicans in Congress is even lower. And the reason we grass roots people are disgusted with Congressional Republicans is because of the Mike Castles, the John McCains, the Arlen Specters, and the Lisa Murkowskis. They’re squishy neo-statists.

What I fear in the next Congress is that we will have a Republican majority that won’t advance the conservative agenda. This will re-stain our party, take the steam out of the conservative ascendency that is occurring in the country, and hand Obama the opportunity to run against Congress. No. I would rather see a Democrat in that seat that see an almost Democrat.

You establishment Republicans, can’t you see it? These leftists aren’t really Republicans. I don’t doubt that Mike Castle is in the mold of Arlen Specter and Charlie Crist, and when the chips are down, he would just as soon bolt to the Democrats. No, no, no – a thousand times no.

So why did Juan Williams get this right and Kristol and Krauthammer get it wrong? I think it’s because Williams is looking at this logically, and the “conservatives” have too much emotion wrapped up in this. Living in Washington, I think they are embarrassed by true conservatives like Sarah Palin and Christine O’Donnell. Williams has no emotion in this contest and his thinking is clearer here.
