Romney paved the way for Obamacare

During the 2012 presidential election campaign, I caught grief from Mormon friends and some family members for not supporting Mitt Romney. I made several posts on this blog about being LDS and not for Romney. There was a feeling among many Mormons that, since Romney was a Mormon, he had to be a good guy and we should vote for him. I didn’t share those feelings. One of the points I made was about Romney being weak in fighting Obamacare because it was patterned after Romneycare in Massachusetts.

So I was particularly interested when I heard about Romney’s recent statement on the subject.

Last Friday, Romney had an interview with the Boston Globe where he brought up the subject of Obamacare.

The occasion was the passing away Friday of Staples founder, Tom Stemberg. Here’s part of what the Globe reported about that interview:

Romney recalled that shortly after he was elected, Mr. Stemberg asked him why he ran for governor. Romney said he wanted to help people, and Mr. Stemberg replied that if he really wanted to help, he should give everyone access to health care, which Romney said he hadn’t really considered before.

“Without Tom pushing it, I don’t think we would have had Romneycare,” Romney said. “Without Romneycare, I don’t think we would have Obamacare. So without Tom, a lot of people wouldn’t have health insurance.”

After a firestorm erupted about these comments, Romney tried to walk them back and posted on his Facebook page how he really was against Obamacare. Right–we hear this from politicians all the time. After revealing what they really think about an issue they realize that it contradicts what they want you to think they believe. But his comments to the Globe clearly indicate that he feels proud about his role and Tom Stemberg’s role in paving the way for Obamacare.

Do you agree? Disagree? I welcome your comments.
