Dump Dupnik

I heard on Fox News that someone from Salt Lake City had initiated a petition campaign for a recall election for Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik. Kudos to him for the effort. I hope he succeeds.

Here’s a link to the Recall Dupnik Facebook page. I commend it to you.

There is clearly something wrong with the man, when he takes a criminal event like this shooting tragedy and tries to turn it into an effort to silence those whose politics he doesn’t like. And then he gives ammunition to Jared Loughner’s defense by making up excuses for him and broadcasting them.

But people who react the way he has usually have other issues, and they do things like that to either distract others from their own deficiencies or to justify themselves in their own mind. He may have missed opportunities to intercept Jared Loughner. I understand he had information going back to 2007 of Loughner’s threats against Gabrielle Giffords. Two things he possibly could have done that should be investigated are: 1) Have Loughner committed, or 2) Prosecute him on an earlier offense (I have been given to understand that a felony conviction on his record would have prevented Loughner from acquiring the gun).

Furthermore, I don’t know what Mr. Dupnik’s oath of office says, exactly, but I imagine it must include a pledge to enforce the laws. And he has publicly proclaimed that he will refuse to enforce SB 1070, which the law requires him to do. So, if SB 1070 is upheld by the courts, we will have the spectacle of a highly visible lawbreaker charged with enforcing the laws. To me, that is clear grounds for removal.

And who is he to talk about the level of vitriol in our political discourse? Weren’t you, Sheriff, one of those throwing the “racist” bomb into the discussion of SB 1070?

It’s interesting. Compare the Tucson murders with the Discovery Channel bomber from last September. The Left tries to tie Loughner to conservative rhetoric, which is a fantasy. But they deny that James Lee, the Discovery Channel bomber, should have any connection to left-wing rhetoric. James Lee, you will recall, went into the Discovery Channel with bombs strapped to his chest and took hostages, all out of global warming hysteria. He said that he was “awakened” by Al Gore’s book, An Inconvenient Truth. But no, no, it would be so wrong to tie anything Gore has said or done to any violence. It’s conservatives who incite violence.

You’ve gotta love the chutzpah of these leftists who lecture us about civility in political discussions.
